Business and vacation travelers can fly straight into the heart of three of the Golden Isles – St. Simons Island, Sea Island, and Little St. Simons Island – by landing at St. Simons Island Airport at McKinnon Field (SSI).
St. Simons Island Airport is a busy general aviation facility serving pilots and passengers with the most up-to-date services in the midst of an island beach/golf/nature getaway.
The airport has two active runways – 4/22 at 5,800 feet long and 16/34 at 3,313 feet long. Several non-precision approaches provide inclement-weather access, as well as a visual guidance system to assist pilots on landing.
Georgia Deparmtent of Transportation – Economic Impact Report for the St. Simons Island Airport at McKinnon Field.

In the summer of 2019, the GDOT undertook a statewide study to estimate the annual economic impact of 102 general aviation and commercial airports in the state of Georgia. The study found that SSI generates a total estimated $43,227,400 annually to the state. The report detailing this economic impact to our state and community from SSI is linked in the report image below. This study was completed pre-COVID-19.
Before construction of McKinnon St. Simons Island Airport, small craft commonly took off and landed on beaches near the St. Simons Pier and on Sea Island.
